Australian Northern Nationals 2024
20th July 2024
Brisbane, Australia
34 Players
7 rounds SSS, Cut to top-8
At the same time as Canadian runners were fighting for their lives at their east coast nationals, Australian players were gathering in Brisbane and giving the Corporations what for.
PD (6) and Azmari (5) were the favourite Corp choices. While they performed admirably (56% [14/25] and 58% [11/19] win rates respectively), other purple and yellow decks did not, and neither ID was able to carry their faction into a positive win rate. R+ (3) did particularly poorly, winning just 2 of 11 games (18%).
Kit (9) was the most popular ID of the day, but failed to convert well into the cut (11% conversion against 24% baseline). The three Lat players, however, made an amazing showing (73% [8/11] win rate), and were rewarded with two Top Cut placements. Esâ (5) also did well, with a 63% [12/19] win rate and 40% cut conversion. Interestingly, and despite the devastating efficiency of Begemot, most of the eco-insurrectionist’s losses were to Weyland.
Half of the four Arissana players at the tournament managed to fight their way into the cut (one World Tree, one reg), but, it was really quite a disappointing day for our favourite frog enthusiast (47% [9/19] win rate), who wasn’t able to take a single game against either PD or Ob.
Capitalising on a decline in the number of Miss Bones, the tournament winner (Chicken Slayer) went undefeated with a Reaper Function Ob deck. Whether this means that asset spam is more broadly viable (even in a World Tree meta) is unclear, but the success of an asset based deck at a nationals level event will be a welcome refreshment to some—whilst no doubt lamented by others.
Chicken Slayer also played a Kit list that could not decide between Lobisomem and Inversificator—prompting the question: why not both?
Spearheaded by outstanding performances from both Lat and Esâ, Runners were finally able to break into positive win rates. The overall Runner win rate was 52% [61/117] in swiss, levelling out to 50% [7/14] in the cut.
